Paint Sheen Guide: Flat, Eggshell, Satin, or Semi-Gloss?

Confused about paint sheens? Learn which finish works best for each room in your home with this simple guide from Titan Painting.

What Is Paint Sheen?

Sheen refers to how shiny or matte your paint finish appears. It’s not just about looks — different sheens have different durability and are suited for different rooms.

The Sheen Spectrum

From least to most shiny:

  1. Flat/Matte
  2. Eggshell
  3. Satin
  4. Semi-Gloss
  5. High-Gloss

Choosing by Room

Ceilings: Flat

Flat paint hides imperfections and doesn’t reflect light, making ceilings look smooth and even.

Living Rooms & Bedrooms: Eggshell or Flat

Low-traffic areas can use less durable finishes. Eggshell has a subtle warmth and is easier to clean than flat.

Hallways & Family Rooms: Satin

Higher traffic means more scuffs and fingerprints. Satin wipes clean easily while still looking elegant.

Kitchens & Bathrooms: Satin or Semi-Gloss

Moisture and grease require a more durable, washable finish. Semi-gloss resists humidity well.

Trim, Doors & Cabinets: Semi-Gloss or High-Gloss

These high-touch surfaces need durability and easy cleaning. Higher sheen also creates nice contrast with walls.

Kids’ Rooms & Playrooms: Satin or Semi-Gloss
